With the holidays and flu season fast approaching (is it really a coincidence the two come hand in hand?), minimizing stress and boosting immunity are top of mind, and essential oils are touted as a miracle cure for both. Diffusing the fragrant, sensory oils into the air is key to aromatherapeutic practices, with a long history of use as alternative medicines. Along with making your home generally smell delightful, many essential oils boast anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, immune-stimulating, and antibacterial properties to keep pesky colds and anxiety symptoms at bay. First off, you’ll want get yourself an ultrasonic diffuser or a “nebulizer,” which uses an electric pump and water (similar to a small humidfier) to atomize the scent molecules and disperse them into the air as a fine mist. Then, pick your
poison cure — here are a few oils with proven benefits and what they do best:
- Bergamot oil: This citrus oil is known for its mood- and energy-boosting abilities, but its invigorating scent is also said to help bolster immunity and clear your respiratory system.
- Lavender oil: Need a good night’s sleep? (Don’t we all?) Make this your go-to oil. Lavender’s soothing and calming properties make it a natural sleep-aid. It’s also said to help relieve chapped lips and motion sickness.
- Rosemary oil: Shown to improve memory, reach for this oil to help cut fatigue and and reduce anxiety.
- Peppermint: Headaches are no match for this stimulant, which can also support concentration and immunity thanks to antifungal and antimicrobial properties.

Mad Men is missed for many reasons, not the least of which is its stellar wardrobe inspiration, particularly for the Joan Holloways of the world. The show’s costume designer, Janie Bryant, clearly missed her too; later this month, Bryant is launching JXB by Janie Bryant, a line of womenswear dedicated to sizes 12 to 24. But while the essence of Joan’s sex appeal is still there, don’t expect a rehash of Mad Men‘s period looks. Jeans are a major focus of the collection, made with high-quality Japanese denim backed with “Fit Fluid,” a mesh and lycra control panel that wraps around the waist and back to “really contour the body,” says Bryant. Campaign model (and total knockout) Marquita Pring consulted with Bryant on the fits, helping to ensure each piece fit her every curve just right. For some, the holiday season is all about festive fêtes and copious cocktails, but for beauty lovers, it means two things: red lipstick and sparkles. Thankfully, YouTube star and professional makeup artist, Lisa Eldridge, knows it and has created three of the most perfect matte lipstick shades for the season. The ultra-rich reds — Velvet Ribbon, a classic scarlet hue with a blue undertone (great for making teeth look whiter); Velvet Morning, a bright orange-red; and Velvet Jazz, a deeper brick red — come embossed with the celebrity artist’s signature on the top and will retail for US $34 each or US $100 for a set of all three. The line is Eldridge’s first foray into cosmetics, and will launch exclusively on her site on Monday. Vogue

• Wet and Wild
MTV just turned up the heat on its slate of upcoming revivals. First it announced that TRL was coming back, followed by The Hills, The Real World and Cribs, and now the network’s reviving one of its most famous franchises: MTV Spring Break. Known for its wild parties, star-studded musical lineup and celebrity guests, MTV Spring Break 2.0 is bringing back all the staples but with a modern, do-gooder twist. In order to appeal to the younger, more conscious generation, the network will also host alternative events for young activists who are more focused on giving back than getting lit. But if getting blackout drunk and making questionable decisions is your thing, the global event will take place from March 19–21, 2019, at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Cancún, Mexico. Deadline

In our fast-paced world, we’re grateful there’s a coffee shop on every corner to keep us well-caffeinated. But if new Canadian startup Bon Tempshas its way, soon we’ll getting our fix from tea instead — and slowing down to sip it. Co-founder Ali Ogston says she sees Bon Temps as “a future competitor for Starbucks,” and envisions her brand’s future cafés as places “where women can work, play and celebrate, and wind down…in a way that’s just not possible at a café like Starbucks today.” But for now, the brand is starting small with an online shop offering a selection of eight 100% organic teas: black, white, mint green, green, ginger, chai, chamomile and pu’erh. The teas are free of artificial flavours, packed in unbleached corn fibre sachets, and are sold in boxes of 20 sachets for $16, or variety packs of three kinds (named after feminist icons Gloria Steinem and Maya Angelou — a nod to the company’s initiatives investing in women to help them “explore their passions and do what they love”) for $48. Art curator Ashley Mulvihill wants to make buying art more accessible. “For a long time, I’ve noticed a huge gap in the Canadian market between emerging artists and people who are eager to start collecting art, but don’t know how or where to start, and don’t have thousands of dollars to buy from established galleries,” says Mulvihil. So, she’s opened Ninth Editions, a new online art gallery and shop, to connect would-be buyers with local artists. Launched this past Thursday, the first-of-its-kind shop aims to make it easy for Canadians to discover and support local artists and shop authentic one-of-a-kind artworks (no “trendy,” mass-produced prints here), while removing barriers like intimidating gallery settings and sky-high prices. The site features original works and limited-edition prints by Canadian and international artists, all priced between $90 and $650, with most pieces in the $100 to $300 range.

If you’re tired of paying hella high prices for high-quality merchandise, a new marketplace is promising to make all your debt-free dreams come true. Partnering with high-end manufacturers that work with luxury brands, Italic is offering consumers a chance to get quality products straight from the source. The company’s already signed on leather goods factories that work with Prada, Christian Louboutin, and Givenchy; an eyewear factory that works with EssilorLuxottica; bedding factories that work with Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons; and a factory that produces clothing for J Brand. Though the product quality will essentially be the same, without the high-end brand association, products will be priced significantly lower (think less than $300 for handbags, less than $100 for prescription eyewear, less than $425 for leather jackets and between $80 and $120 for luxury bedding).
