The Affordable Care Act is Still on Life Support

The Background

You’d think a man who had just been diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour would vote in favour of keeping Obamacare, but ’twas not the case in the good ol’ U.S. of A. The Senate (including John McCain, who was just diagnosed with a primary glioblastoma) voted to continue the healthcare debate, keeping the GOP’s dreams alive of repealing the Affordable Care Act. CNN

What Else You Need to Know

Just because they’re open to debate, doesn’t mean it’s a closed case. Many of the senators who voted in favour of advancing the bill said they wouldn’t support it as is (including McCain). The majority are focused on the fact that Trump ran on a promise that he would repeal and replace Obamacare, and not doing at least part of that would be a huge blow to the party’s credibility and their chances of re-election in 2020. Only time will tell what this really means for the future of the ACA, but according to Trump, “This was a big step.”
