The GOP’s Health Care Bill Is So Unhealthy It Hurts

The Background

If you’re trying to keep up with American politics, especially when it comes to “repealing and replacing Obamacare,” you better take a Gravol — cause it’s dizzying Just when we (they) thought the GOP’s new bill had some legs, the Senate shut that sh*t down by a vote of 55 to 45, less than 24 hours after voting it through for debate. (Confused yet? Us too.) The proposed bill would have cut a good chunk of the ACA, including repealing individual and employer mandates, ending Medicaid expansion and revoking many of the law’s taxes. Despite the fact that DT thinks Americans can survive without Obamacare, it looks like Congress has finally figured out that a straight repeal just won’t fly. CNN

What Else You Need to Know

While we know Obamacare needs some fixing, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon. The Republicans can’t even agree amongst themselves, never mind with the Democrats.Rob Portman, one of the Republican senators who voted against the current bill said they would “continue to work on replacement” but they’ve been working on that for more than seven years, and yet, here we are.

What’s Next?

Since 45 Senate Republicans still back the idea as is, they’ll need to spend the next few weeks working on a way to convince another five to get on board.
